Bouncing Back From Tough Grades: Tips from a Been-There-Done-That Student
Ugh, low marks. We've all been there. It's a total mood-killer, and it can make you question your abilities. But hey, guess what? It's not the end of the world! In fact, it's an awesome opportunity to learn, grow, and come back even stronger
Here are some tips from someone who's totally been in your shoes:
Feel your feelings.
It's natural to be disappointed or frustrated after a tough exam. Give yourself time to process those feelings. Talk to a friend, family member, or trusted teacher about how you're feeling. While it's important to acknowledge your emotions, don't get stuck in a loop of negativity. Remind yourself that this doesn't define you or your abilities
Figure out what went wrong. Did you underestimate how much time you'd need to study? Was there a specific topic that tripped you up? Once you know what went wrong, you can make a plan to fix it. If your teacher allows you to review the exam after grading, take advantage of that opportunity. Look for questions you missed and see if you can identify why. Were there specific concepts you tripped up on? Did you misunderstand the question phrasing?
- Talk to your teacher!
- Chances are, they're there to help. Explain what happened and ask for pointers on how to improve. I know sometimes it might feel difficult to gain the courage to talk to strict teachers but they will definitely appreciate the effort you are taking to improve your grades. Guess what ur teacher can also let you know where you went wrong and teach you how to write the ideal answers.
Find a study buddy!
Studying with a friend can keep you motivated and focused. You can quiz each other and explain concepts you don't understand. This truly helped me a lot, who knew your friend can also help with your grades. You and your friend can discuss answers and help each other out. But, let's be real it's not possible to meet your friend regularly due to various reasons, instead of meeting up offline you can have a meeting online through various platforms like Zoom or Google Meet. You can also find websites where you can study on a call with strangers with the same goals as you!
Focus on what you CAN control.
- Remember, grades aren't everything! They're important, sure, but they don't define you. Focus on your overall growth and development as a learner. It is nearly impossible to improve your marks overnight. remember improvement matters the most.
Celebrate the small wins! Aced a practice quiz? Understood a tough concept? Give yourself a high five! These small successes will keep you motivated and help you reach your bigger goals 🏆
Getting a low mark doesn't mean you're not smart or capable. It just means you have an opportunity to learn and improve. So pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and get ready to show everyone what you're really made of!
